My Thoughts on TombRaider

I am mostly a PC gamer and used to keyboard + mouse for shooters for years. For Tomb Raider, I used Xbox controller for change, also because I found it easier to control 3rd person characters with a controller in games like Assassin’s Creed, Batman, etc. Though aiming with a controller was challenging.

Tomb Raider is an action-adventure game about a girl looking out for adventures. Their ship gets wrecked on a mysterious island and then first 60 to 90 minutes is about the struggle to survive and finding the other crew members. This initial part is focused more character development of Lara Croft and game might feel little restrictive/slow at this early time, but it opens up later on. I really like this character development part, how all this cruelty on the Island and this struggle to survive contributes to her growth as a character she’s famous for. There’s not much focus on other crew members, but you get some detail about other characters in the form of these documents that you will find while exploring the Island.

Weekly Update – Starting a new section

So I am starting a new section on the blog about my thoughts on the games I play mostly single player for now. I have been thinking to start this section about my thoughts on Games I play from quite some time now but I in past 6-8 months I haven’t finished any other single player game other than BlackMesa but to do justice to black mesa I have to spend some more time in that game and maybe some time in original HL1. So that has to wait for sometime. But I will be posting tomorrow about my thoughts on Tomb Raider that I finished recently and again only single player that I finished in last 6-8 months.

Mobile Game in development

I mentioned a couple of weeks back that I took 2 days break from engine stuff and made a 2D mobile game in Unity3D .
Well things workout and we are working on the game since to make it ready to be released soon.
It’s another Tetris kind of game but with few twists of our own to make it a unique experience. It will be a free to play game on Android and hopefully on IOS too.
Approx 80% of the game has been done, things remaining including some artwork, some more testing & level balancing and social networking features ( e.g sharing scores over facebook, twitter etc).
Hopefully we would finish the game by next week.
Other people working with me are Ravi Hansda and Justin Sousa.

[WIP] Parallax Occlusion Mapping – 2

This version is created according to POM described by Tatarchuk in 2006. The benefit of this version over offset limiting POM I posted last week is that it doesn’t produces artifacts for higher height scaling values and also works very well at grazing angles compared to older version. I am not done yet, trying couple of more versions / variations.

From past few days I am working on Parallax Occlusion Mapping ( or POM) and similar variations like parallax offset mapping, cone step POM, relief mapping, silhouette detection, etc.  I will test and experiment with few of them to get desired results.
